Personal information

What would a schoolboy in the 1980s have done if he had an electric train set, but was more interested in computers? Right: sell the train set and buy a Commodore 64. That is how it all began. What followed in my case was a period of self-taught computer programming using Basic, Pascal, Assembler, dBASE, etc., the study of law and a post-graduate course in administrative sciences, including administrative information technology. I then began my professional career as a consultant and in-house lawyer in an IT consulting company. It has now been more than 15 years that I have been practicing almost exclusively in the field of IT law.

My focus is on structuring and negotiating IT contracts on domestic and international transactions on behalf of my clients. In this regard, I am interested as much in the technical content of service level agreements as in – for example – issues related to liability and licensing clauses in framework contracts. In many cases, since I have been serving as legal counsel to my clients for several years, I am familiar with their core business, their processes and their distinctive features. I believe it is an advantage to know the contract history of my clients based on my own direct experience, and in this regard, I am able to draw on many, many years of experience as an advisor and company lawyer. In addition to having reviewed, redrafted and negotiated innumerable IT agreements, I have also since had an opportunity to do the contract work on more than 50 SAP projects and other ERP projects and, thus, have considerable expertise in structuring ERP project contracts too.

Another focus of my contract work is in the areas of input management, outsourcing and OEM contracts. In addition to my work as lawyer, I have served for many years on supervisory boards of various IT companies. Those roles also provide me with very different perspectives and insights about the relevant company and its culture.

As part of the social work I do, I participate in so-called pedagogical days held at local secondary schools, attempting thereby to make the older high school students aware of the legal aspects of media and Internet use. I spend my leisure time with my family, ride my bike or inline skate. I also enjoy reading technical and history books and magazines.
